Gastroenterology

The department is currently actively involved in diagnostic endoscopy as well as therapeutic endoscopies. It is equipped with state of art videscopes and accessories required for therapeutic endoscopies. Facilities for videorecording / colour printer for documentation of specific diseases and for comparison are available. Luminal gastroenterology, hepatology and pancreaticobiliary disease investigations and treatment facility are available.

Services Provided

Endoscopies-

• Diagnostic Gastroscopy - to visualize food pipe / stomach / beginning of small intestine. Colonoscopy / iIleoscopy - to visualize anus, rectum, large intestine, terminal end of small intestine.
• ERCP - to visualize bile duct and pancreatic duct. Therapeutic - UGI - Extraction of foreign body (e.g. coin, key, metal pipes, impacted food particle etc.)
• Sclerotherapy of oesophageal varices, Endoscopic vericeal band ligation, Endoscopic treatment of bleeding ulcers & coagulation, Polypectomy, Stent placement, Dilatation of stricture, Achalasia dilatation, Pyloric dilation, point Injection of glue into Oesophageal varices, Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery

The department was started in 1996 and is probably the first of its kind in the private sector. Since its inception all kinds of complex gastrointestinal surgical procedures have been done including surgery for cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, small and large bowel, liver resections, radical cholecystectomy for cancer gall bladder, and pancreatectomies. Surgical procedures for biliary stricture, acute and chronic pancreatitis and for portal hypertension (e.g. lienorenal shunts) have been done. Many young suffering from ulcerative colitis since it preserves sphincter function and avoids a permanent ileostomy.

The department has a regular academic programme including a weekly audit of surgeries performed and Mortality, a Journal Club and Topic or Case discussions. The department hopes to start Liver Transplantation Programme shortly.
